Bigfork Fire Department proposes new levy

Facing population growth and a struggle

to recruit and retain volunteers, the Bigfork Fire Department is asking voters to pass a $325,000 levy estimated to raise property tax by $60 annually on a property worth $300,000.

It is the first levy increase request in the 40-plus year history of the department. Voters will decide the levy’s fate on May 8.

The department’s current levy was designed to support a volunteer workforce but over the years, the department struggles to find new volunteers and the department now pays all but four employees.

The department provides emergency and medical services from the southeast corner of Flathead County to the northern corner of Lake County.
