Bigfork hosts 2nd Indie FilmFest

The Bigfork Independent Film Festival will host it second annual festival April 6 and 7 at the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts.

For 2018 the festival will be open to filmmakers throughout Montana.

The primary purpose of BIFF is to support Montana filmmaking. Despite small budgets and hectic schedules, these filmmakers work hard to put their vision on the screen. Their films embody a lot more than big effects or spectacle. They embody the passions of everyone involved in creating them. Our mission is to create a place where local films can be watched and enjoyed.

BIFF provides a rare opportunity for Montana filmmakers to show their work in front of a local audience. Filmmakers are invited to interact with the audience during a Q&A session following the showings. For the 2018 festival $2,000 in award money is being offered to aspiring filmmakers.

Filmmakers can submit their project using to a panel of judges consisting of film enthusiasts, filmmakers and ex-Hollywood professionals. Judges select films to be shown and pick award winners in each category: Feature, Short, Animated and Student. In addition there is an Audience Choice award that will be determined from an audience survey. To enter a film, filmmakers can go to and search for “Bigfork Independent Film Festival”. Detailed submission instructions can be found in Withoutabox.

The idea for an independent festival came about around the time of the first Bigfork Retrospective Film Festival.

“I was approached by local filmmakers looking for a place to show their films, and while I couldn't fit them into the retro festival I was impressed by the quality of their work," said organizer Steve Shapiro. "By showcasing them in a separate indie film festival we can present films to the community that they would have otherwise never seen. At BIFF filmmakers are encouraged to mingle with the audience and answer their questions. Bringing creative and talented filmmakers together with an enthusiastic local audience creates a synergy that is rare these days.”

Bigfork Independent Film Festival thanks its donors, corporate sponsors and partners.
