Grateful Bread: It's your huckleberry (pie)

USA Today names Bigfork's Grateful Bread's huckleberry pie as one of the Top Ten Best in Montana.

“My husband and I were enjoying our annual break on the beach in Long Island, WA., when we were surprised by an editor of USA TODAY 10Best that we were selected by their expert panel as a contender for Best Huckleberry Pie in Montana,” said owner Gabriele Massie. “What an honor for us and for our small town of Bigfork. We work so hard making most of our baking and menu items from scratch, by hand, the old-fashion way.”

Nominees were chosen by a panel of relevant experts which include a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from; and relevant expert contributors—well-traveled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields-and in their cities [of Montana]-but discriminating in their tastes.

The nomination panel for each award category was displayed on an online contest page. All voting was digital.

Grateful Bread Café & Bakery has won many blue ribbons and “best of” local awards for their bakery desserts, gourmet soup, meals, and restaurant since Michael and Gabriele Massie purchased the business in 2012. “Wow! Winning this award expands the area to the whole state of Montana. I sure hope we can keep up,” said owner Gabriele Massie.

The bakery serves many kinds of all-butter crust pies, filled with house-made pie fillings using locally grown fruit—huckleberry, huckleberry raspberry, huckleberry raspberry peach, Flathead cherry, apple, mixed berries, strawberry rhubarb, and blueberry. They also offer coconut cream, Belgium chocolate cream, and pecan pies—all by special order.

Bigfork’s newly remodeled and expanded 2,500 square-foot bakery and cafe is located next to Harvest Foods at 8111 MT Hwy 35. The restaurant offers table-service dining, old-fashion bakery, and counter-service area for take-out and special orders. All day breakfast and lunch are served Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Live original acoustic music by Lars Pointer adds to the relaxed atmosphere at the local community’s favored location.

The “seriously scratch-made” menu offers deep-dish quiche, benedicts, scramblers, Amish oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches & burritos, buttermilk pancakes, wraps, artisan sandwiches, gourmet soups, fresh salads, seafood, burgers, paninis, beer-crust pizzas, calzones, fresh baked artisan breads, including the bakery’s claim-to-fame ‘Peasant Bread,’ pastries, cookies, espresso bar, smoothies, and cocktails.

The bakery released its annual holiday special order forms on Nov. 1. Customers can pick one up at the café or on their Facebook page at
